This happens more often than you think.

If you’re unsure whether you’re under debt review — or suspect you might be — this guide is for you.

We’ll show you:

  • How to check your debt review status
  • What signs to look out for
  • And what to do right now if your name is flagged

What Is Debt Review?

Debt review is a legal process designed to protect over-indebted South Africans from being taken to court by creditors.
When you go under review, a flag is placed on your credit profile, alerting credit providers that you are under a structured repayment plan.

That flag remains in place until the process is fully completed — and unless it’s removed properly, it can block you from getting any form of credit.

How to Check If You’re Under Debt Review

There are 3 easy ways to confirm your debt review status:

✅ 1. Check Your Credit Report

Your credit report will clearly show if you’re flagged under debt review.

You can get a free credit report once per year from these major bureaus:

Look for any of the following:

  • Debt review flag
  • “Consumer under debt counselling”
  • A “Form 17.2” status notification
  • Negative account statuses

If these are listed, you are officially under debt review.

✅ 2. Check with the National Credit Regulator (NCR)

You can contact the NCR to find out if your ID number is listed under debt review or with a registered debt counsellor.
Visit www.ncr.org.za or call 0860 627 627.

Need help? We can also check your status for you — just send us a message and we’ll assist.

✅ 3. Apply for Credit and Monitor the Outcome

This method is risky, but if you apply for a small line of credit and get declined with a reason like:

“Client under debt counselling” —
That’s a sign your debt review flag is still active.

We don’t recommend this as your first option, but it often serves as a red flag for those unaware of their status.

🚫 What NOT to Do

  • Don’t ignore the flag — it won’t go away on its own
  • Don’t keep applying for credit — this hurts your score even more
  • Don’t assume it’s been “cancelled” unless you’ve received formal proof (Form 19)

✅ What to Do If You’re Flagged Under Debt Review

If you’ve confirmed you’re under debt review, here’s your next move:

🧾 1. Find Out If You’ve Completed the Process

If you’ve paid off all the debts listed in the debt review plan, you can exit debt review legally.

To do this, you’ll need:

  • Paid-up letters from all creditors
  • A clearance certificate (Form 19) issued by your debt counsellor
  • Submission of this certificate to the credit bureaus for profile updating

Once submitted, it can take up to 21 working days for the bureaus to remove the flag.

⚖️ 2. If You Haven’t Finished Paying — You Have Options

Let’s say you’ve changed jobs, increased your income, or settled some of your debts. You might qualify to exit debt review early through a court application.

This requires a legal process called a rescission — and CDM can help you every step of the way.

We review your profile, prepare your supporting documents, and work with legal professionals to give you the best chance at success.
